摘要:接地与限制性关系分句的关系

Bernardo (1979), Fox (1987), Fox and Thompson (1990), and Nugsamee (2003) present full discussion on the functions of English restrictive relative clauses (RRC, hereafter).他们的研究结果显示,主要有两方面的限制性关系分句的功能:接地和说明。 Their findings show that there are two main functions of Restrictive Relative Clauses: grounding and description. If the information coded in a RRC has already been known to the hearer/reader, the RRC is used to ground the referent and help the listener/reader identify the referent mentioned in the previous discourse. Restrictive Relative Clauses of this kind serve grounding function. Or, it may make assertion about its head NP and provide new information for the newly-introduced head NP. Restrictive Relative Clauses of this kind perform description function. As far as the grounding function of Restrictive Relative Clauses is concerned, Givon (1993, 1995) provides more detailed discussion on this function. Givon (1993) defines relative clauses as “subordinate clauses that are embedded, as noun modifiers, inside a noun phrase” and he also points out that “they are part of the grammar of referential identification” (p.107). To put it another way, they are used in grounding head nouns to the knowledge-base that is already in the mind of the hearer. The speaker assumes that the information coded in a RRC is familiar or accessible to the hearer, so the proposition corresponding to that situation or event in the RRC is pragmatically presupposed.https://www.51lunwen.org/daxueyingyu/
According to Givon, the presupposed sources are past experience, speech situation perceived by both participants, lexical-generic knowledge and episodic-text, as the following examples illustrate. [6]
(1) a. past experience grounding The woman who you met last year came to visit you.
b. speech situation grounding The woman sitting at the end of the bar is my sister.
c. lexical-generic knowledge grounding The man who married my mother is a crook.
d. episodic-text grounding The woman I mentioned first is going out with me tonight.

Givon notes that definite given NPs may be grounded to these four distinct presupposed sources. In (1a), the speaker assumes that the past event coded in the RRC you met the man last year is familiar to the hearer and thus can be used to launch an anaphoric referent search. In (1b), grounding the referent the woman to the current speech situation is achieved by the speaker’s assumption that the hearer noticed the woman at the end of bar either on the hearer’ own or due to the speaker’s intervention. In addition, English Restrictive Relative Clauses may partake in grounding referents to generic knowledge. As shown in (1c), the referent the man is grounded to the generic knowledge supplied by the RRC: The speaker has a mother and she marries a man. Finally, in (1d), the referent the woman is grounded by referring it back to the previous episode of the current text.

同样,福克斯(1987年,1990年)的有关条款声称,可以提供一个链接,通过一个指涉的话语将其引入其中。

Likewise, Fox (1987, 1990) claims that relative clauses can provide a link via a referent that has already been introduced into the discourse. The referent can thus be used to ground the head NPs. Consider the following examples.

我们这里有语言学功能的人实在是太多了。
