I would like to thank Professor Li Mei for the time she invested in helping me with this dissertation. I chose one of his/her probably busiest semesters to write this dissertation and pestering him/her with new drafts every week and expecting feedback on each and every one of them. Abstract
Proverb translation is a complicated activity, the process of which is a one characterized by constant choices. Of all these choices, the choice of proverb translation strategies is regarded by some people as the most important and the most meaningful topic in translation practice. In the words of the translation world, the translator has to face the choice of either foreignization or domestication while doing translation. These two translation strategies are英语论文网 【http://www.51lunwen.org】 the commonly-employed ones which are believed to be extended forms of literal translation and liberation translation in the translation history. How to choose them in translation practice has been a heated debate in the translation world.
This dissertation has introduced, in four chapters, the foreignization and domestication in translating proverbs. The first chapter is the introduction of the whole dissertation; the second chapter has introduced the various definition of proverb, characteristics and classifications of proverbs, and significance of proverb translation study; the third chapter gives the main usage of foreignization and domestication in proverb translation; the last chapter concludes the whole dissertation, giving the theoretical improvement of domestication and foreignization, and limitations and suggestions for future study.

摘要
谚语翻译是一项复杂的活动，谚语翻译的过程就是一个不断面临选择的过程。而谚语翻译策略的选择则是其中十分重要和十分有意义的一个话题。按翻译界的说法，谚语翻译策略可分为两种：归化和异化，它们是翻译中处理文化因素的常用策略，往往被看作是直译和意译的延伸。这两种翻译策略如何选择，这个问题一直是译界争论的热门话题。
本文分四部分来阐述“归化”和“异化”两种不同翻译策略在谚语翻译中的运用。第一章是对全文简要地介绍；第二章从不同角度阐释了谚语的定义、谚语的分类、以及谚语翻译的重要性；第三章重点介绍了“归化”和“异化”两种翻译策略在不同翻译背景中的运用；第四章是全文的总结部分，归纳总结了“归化”和“异化”两种翻译策略的理论进展，给出了本文研究的局限性以及对于未来研究的建议。
