brave. In the face of any dim culties. she never escaped but
faced them courageously.Jane would rather starve to death than
be Rochester s mistress, Jane broke through all handicaps and
married Roc hester.Her moral strength caused Mr. Roc hester to
lean finally on her in every emergency, an d Roc hester felt he
coul d not leave her. Her generous nature revealed itself in her
added love far Adele when she heard about her background.
Jane s compassion an d willingness to forgive offered Mrs.Reed a
chan ce at reconciliation;Jan e s g0od reason ma de her self—con—
trol,even under the almost hypnotic spell of St John s religious
fervor.Jan e s emotion was natural,rich,enthusiastic,like fire.
St John s strength of“ice”couldn t change the“fire”of Jane s na—
ture. Generally speaking,Jan e s spirit, strong in her first en—
counter of the book,rema ined strong throughout the book.
On one han d,Jane had lots of good characters,on the oth—
er hand, she had some weak characters. Firsdy, Jan e appreci—
ated individual struggle. regarding individual happy life as her
life aim. She could not find the final way to settle down social
problems.Laboring people in that unfair society sufered oppres—
sion and exploitation from the ruling class. Jan e realized the
cause of oppression an d exploitation was that capitalists own ed
wealth , laboring pe ople had no economic indepe ndence. Howev—
er, Jane didn t ofered a thorough way to solve laboring pe ople s
poverty.She thought inheritance was a good way to solve pover—
ty. For instance. the orphan school was a man world s hell where
children were cruely treated an d kilied, but Jan e publicized the
orphan scho l could be improved with the help of the rich.Jane
attacked the hypocrisy of the religion, but she idealized St John,
who under the beauty lied coldness,selfishness, dishonesty and
inhumanity.Though Jane refused to ma rry him, yet she always
appreciated his strong spirit to devote himself to religion. It was
impossible for Jane to realize what St John did was really a kind
of spiritual invasion for colonial people.Jane criticized unequal—
ness be tween the sexes,advocating freedom of marriage,simulta—
neously,preaching individual struggle.All these were the weak—
ness of Jane s character,which revealed by the author,Charlotte
Bronte, as a daughter of a clergyman,had her class limitations.
Jane s revolt was a petty bourgeoisie s revolt. For the sake of in—
