‘Politics and language are intimately intertwined. To link the study of these dimensions is to seem to understand something very central to human behaviour’ (Chilton 2002: vii).

Political expression is a manifestation of identity through discourse. Despite the relatively recent entry of political discourse into academic study, a tremendous amount of research has been carried out on the link between politics and language. The bulk of this work focuses on inequity, power imbalances and public influence in political discourse (Chimobo 1999, Chilton, Wodak 2002, van Dijk 1981, 1985, 2004a, 2004b), while a smaller sampling of studies asks the question of how language affects political popularity and affiliation (Duranti 2006, Heritage and Greatbach 1986). Though the two branches of research may seem disconnected, this paper will focus on applying an analytic framework from the former group to a sample of a political candidate’s speech, in order to answer the question explored by the latter.
Teun van Dijk’s framework of ideology analysis helps explain political affiliation. Van Dijk (2004a) has described politics as being ‘…usually discursive as well as ideological and ideologies are largely reproduced by text and talk’. Politics and discourse are tied to ideology, the framework through which a person defines their identity, opinions and state of belonging to a group. Political expression is another form of group affiliation, marked by a common ideology. Van Dijk outlines his framework for discursive ideology analysis in his 1995 essay, ‘Discourse Analysis as Ideology Analysis’, further developing it in later works (2004a, 2004b).
