1 Introduction
1 .1 Background
The Internet is defined as the worldwide interconnection of individual networks operated by government, industry, academia, and private parties. Since 1994 it has been expanded to serve millions of users and a multitude of purposes in all parts of the world. In a matter of very few years, the Internet has consolidated itself as a very powerful
platform that has changed the ways for people to do business, and to communicate. The Internet has given an International or, a "Globalized" dimension to the world. It has become the Universal source of information for millions of people, at home, at school, and at work. So it is one of the important parts of people's life.
In the present era, along with the Internet rapid development, the number of our country netizens also present obvious rising trend. China Internet Network Information Center has published the 27th China Internet Development Report, stating that by the end of December 2010, the number of Chinese netizens had reached 457 million, an increase of 73.3 million compared with the same period in 2009. Against such a background, Internet user's ID (net name in this paper) is an inevitable product of this phenomenon. I believe every Internet user must have the experience that when he or she enters some kind of (the full name of bbs) bbs, community, or sends some emails, he must register, input the user name or account number to enter. To most of netizens, net name is very common in their lives. In term of nickname, a famous writer William Hazlitt said: A nickname is the heaviest stone that the devil can throw at a man. It is a bugbear to the imagination, and, though we do not believe in it, it still haunts our apprehensions." Just like nickname, net name can reflect certain aspects of oneself in a given culture. Imagine a society where people do not have names. What would it mean for communication and interaction? How would individuals be recognized and distinguished from each other? Could such a society function at all? A life without
names would be very difficult and complicated indeed. In fact, and probably as a result of it being too difficult to muster, there are no such societies. Names are and have always been part of human life. Richard D. Alford states that ethnographic research has not found one single society whose members do not have names (1998: 1).Names are cultural universals, something we have in common whether we live in London, Beijing, or California.
But despite the fact that we all share the experience of having a name, recognizing it as something natural and taking it for granted, there are vast historical and geographical differences as to what is regarded as a possible and suitable name. In cyberspace, net name plays an important role in our cyber life just as real name in real world, every one should have a net name which is free to be chosen.
To sum up, net name is becoming more and more important in people's life and the study of it is necessary and urgent.
1.2 Significance and Objective of the Study
1.2.1 The Analysis of Net Names is valuable:
Firstly, the analysis of net name makes contribution to the study of network language. Network language, with its special features, is created for the sake of netizen's Inter
