Abstract

To the Lighthouse, written by British stream of consciousness novelist Virginia Woolf, is a mature work in dealing with time. The work well demonstrates the author’s concept of psychological time, which enables it to become one of the representatives of Woolf’s stream of consciousness novels. This thesis presents the general concept of Woolf’s idea of time and analyzes its specific clues in the novel. Woolf uses the absence and duality of time. This skill of dealing with time helps the use of the stream of consciousness writing techniques such as the characters’ internal monologue, montage, free associations and symbolism, achieves to build the beauty of the structure through symmetrical plot and synchronic dimension of time of the second part and successfully expresses the themes such as the transience of life and work, the subjective nature of reality, etc. and also utilizes motifs to help to develop and inform the text’s major themes.

英国意识流作家伍尔夫的《到灯塔去》是一部巧妙地处理了时间，妥善地安排了情节结构的优秀的意识流小说作品。这部小说很好地诠释了作者的心理时间观念，因而成为伍尔夫的意识流小说的杰出代表。这里将概括地叙述伍尔夫的时间观念并细致地分析其在《到灯塔去》中的应用及重要作用。文学本科毕业论文在这部小说中，伍尔夫利用了时间的“空缺”和时间双重性的手法。这种处理时间的方法不仅有利于一些意识流写作手法的应用，如人物的内心独白，自由联想以及象征主义的运用；也使得作品得以构建唯美的对称文章结构并表现小说第二部分的共时性；此外作者成功地表达了对人生转瞬即逝及现实的主观性的感慨，体现并发展了小说的主旨与主题。
