Edward Morgan Forster (1879-1970) was born in an upper-middle-class family. He was an English novelist, a short story writer, essayist and critic of the 20th century in English literature. He is as famous as D.H.https://www.51lunwen.org/literaturearts/  Lawrence, Joseph Conradand, Virginia Woolf and won the Britain's oldest literary award --- James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
A Room with a View though it is Forster’s third published novel, its origins go back further than those of any of his other novels. It tells the story of how Lucy Honeychurch, a young lady as delightful and innocent as her name suggests, overcomes difficulties and gains the happiness that belongs to her finally.
This thesis is to analyze E.M Foster’s application of symbolism in the novel., of which we can know that the title, characters, and locations, seasons and weather in A Room with A View all have their own symbolic meanings respectively. Through the collection of the information from some books, we can know symbols, roughly speaking, is a sign of something else; in this aspect, all words are symbols. In criticism, however, “symbol” only refers to a word or phrase signifying further than itself. We can better understand the theme of work through the author’s use of symbolism.
The body part of this novel consists of two parts, in which the first part focuses on the interpretation of symbol and symbolism. Part two mainly represents the symbolic meaning of the title, characters, locations, seasons and weather.

Chapter 2 An Interpretation of Symbol and Symbolism符号与象征的解读

Because of the importance of symbol and symbolism in the novel and in order to let us understand this novel better, it is very necessary to understand some basic conceptions about symbol and symbolism.

2.1 An interpretation of symbol符号的解读
From the dictionary, symbol is something that represents or stands for something else, usually by convention or association, a material object used to represent something abstract. It is an object, person, idea and other things used in a literary work to stand for or suggest something else with which it is associated either explicitly or in some more subtle way.
Symbols sometimes are not just applications for conveying meanings, being not a mark of themselves in the concrete circumstances and scenes but also are knitted into the grain of the whole work very closely, and which are very believable both in literal meanings and more powerful in implies all the same. Roughly speaking, it is a sign of something else; in this point, all words are symbols.
A symbol has intricate meanings; it has not only a literal meaning, but also additional meanings beyond the literal. A symbol may have more than one meaning. Actually, most typical symbols do express a wide range of meanings. Like the peony can be regarded as the symbol of China. Thus, in the right context, a peony can express even wider range of meaning than its literal and simple meaning.
Poets, like all of us, employ common symbols such as the terms “the Cross,” “the Red, White, and Blue,”论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
