摘要:The dualism of human nature includes the instinct of civilization and the instinct of savagery, which exist within all human’s heart. Different conditions stimulate different humanities to play their roles; civilization is the outcome of social obligation while the savagery is the most primitive nature.
s own desires, scorn moral rules, and indulge in violence. The first set of impulses might be thought of as the “the instinct of civilization”, which encourages people to work together toward common goals and behave peacefully;the second set of impulses might be thought of as the “the instinct of savagery” or the instinct toward savagery, which urges people to rebel against civilization and instead seek anarchy, chaos, despotism, and violence.
The conflict between civilization and savagery is the major conflict of the novel, Golding wants to describe via the conflict in the novel to discuss human nature, and expresses the despair of human nature.
3.1 The Instinct of Civilization
The instinct of civilization is inherited from civilized society. The instinct to live by rules, act peacefully, follow moral commands and value the good of the group. We see this in Lord of the Flies when the boys first land on the island. They organizes themselves to become a collective, use all can use to make their life easier. They only goal is to be rescued and return into civilizing world.
3.1.1The Track of Civilization on Island
A group of English boys strand on a tropical island before their plane was crashed, The youngest are around six; the oldest among them are around twelve, they scatter over an area on island. First, Ralph meets Piggy on the beach. They want to know what the status of the other boys from the plane. Piggy discovers a large pink and cream white conch shell. Piggy realizes that it could be use as a kind of makeshift trumpet, he suggests Ralph could use to call other boys collect, summoned by the sound, from the shell boys begin straggling onto the beach. From now on, the big conch shell as a symbol, the boy who holds the shell have the right to speak. It becomes a powerful symbol of civilization and order. It also a vessel of political legitimacy and democracy.
The boys decide to elect a leader, Ralph and Jack become the candidates, the choir boys vote for Jack, but all of the other boys vote for Ralph. Ralph wins the vote, he asks Jack as the leader of hunter, presiding over meat. Then Ralph chooses some boys to explore the island. From the peak of the hills they see that they are on an island with no signals of civilization. Thinking about the possibility of rescue, Ralph proposes that the group should light a large signal fire on the top of the island. So that if a ship passes, it will see the fire. The boys collect a mound of dead wood and use the lens from Piggy’s glasses to refract sunlight and set it on fire. Piggy’s glasses represent the power of science and intellectual endeavor in society, it is the most important tools on island and the signal fire itself comes to represent the boy’s group on the idea of civilization. The next step for this small society is building huts, the huts are very important to the boys living on the island, they can use those to avoid rain and live in night. Even now the small society looks orderliness.
The cooperation of actions makes their life easier on the island. The boys seem determined to re-create the society they have lost, they know that they must act with order and forethought if they wish to be rescued. The sense of morality still guides their behavior at this point,
