摘要:In the novel Oliver Twist, Dickens depicted a vivid character of little hero. He is pure, kind, ignorant in spite of the evil environment he is in. Although he is born without parents, he is natured in a miserable workhouse and he is abused by the gang of thieves, he still keeps his good virtue.
zes belief of goodness again. It is also the main character of Oliver Twist. Though Oliver Twist is treated with cruelty and surrounded by coarseness for most of his life, he is a piteous and innocent child. He can not be changed by the surrounding evil environment.
A major concern of Oliver Twist is the question of whether a bad environment can irrevocably poison people’s character and soul. For Oliver Twist, he is always pure no matter how terrible is the environment. For Nancy, she was once poisoned by the adverse environment and degenerated. But her heart still retains the good nature. That is also the reason why she is willing to sacrifice herself to protect Oliver. As the novel progresses, the character that best illustrates the contradictory issues brought up by that question is another heroine Nancy.
Nancy is Bill Sake’s mistress. In the beginning, she is a helper of Fagin to recapture Oliver. But later Nancy overheard their plans to destroy Oliver and she reports their intention to Rose, which ultimately leads to her death. In this novel, her final decision to protect Oliver at a great cost expresses fully the incorruptibility of her basic goodness, no matter how many difficulties she may face. For a long time, Nancy is immersed in the vices. Perhaps her noblest act in the novel is sacrificing her own life in order to protect Oliver . Nancy’s moral complexity is unique among the major characters in Oliver Twist. In the novel, Oliver is all good and Fagin is evil. Only Nancy is capable of both good and evil. She has a contradictory character in the novel. The incorruptibility of natural goodness is one of the themes of the novel. So in order to analysis this theme, we will have an analysis on the character of Oliver and Nancy and environment’s impact. Oliver and Nancy are two main representatives of basic goodness in the novel. From the novel, Dickens uses Oliver’s character to challenge the Victorian idea that criminals are already evil at birth. He confirmed that a corruptible environment is the source of vice. Oliver remains unaffected and keeps a pure heart in spite of facing the surrounding evil forces. The bad environment poisoned Nancy’s character and soul in the beginning but in the end she sacrifices her own life in order to protect Oliver.
In a word, the only difference between Oliver and Nancy is whether of not the environment destroys their characters. Virtue is one of the most important characters of Oliver Twist. Oliver and Nancy are two typical heroes to show the influence of environment on their character. Oliver is perfect person is the novel. On the contrary, Nancy has two aspects. One aspect is virtue. Another aspect is corrupted character. As soon as entering into the society, Oliver gets into the control of Fagin. Most description in the novel indicates Oliver’s goodness virtue in nature. Once in a time, Nancy helped to recapture him and sent him to the thief’s den again. But he still tries to help her rather than hate her. Nancy’s ultimate choice to do good at a great personal cost is a strong argument in favor of the incorruptibility of people’s basic goodness, no matter how terrible environment it may be. So in the following part, we will have a analysis on the virtue of Oliver, the virtue of Nancy and the corrupted character of Nancy.
