has superhuman abilities, plenty of nautical knowledge and whaling skills. As the God’s avatar to fight against the whale, he maintains the dignity of the human from the beginning to the end, inviolably and awe-inspiringly. He is brave and skillful in warfare, perseverant, determinant without fear; he is the hero of exploration of the mysteries of the universe with braveness and persistence. Despite failing to win in the struggle, his daring resistance would never be defeated; his self-esteem would never be conquered. “This is the Ahab--his body was divided, but his spirit is one hundred foot activity of centipedes.” Thus, Ahab symbolizes multiple meanings of the co-existence of kindness and evil, ugliness and beauty.
Herman Melville was one celebrated author of several big 19th-century novels about the sea. Moby Dick (1851), the story of the fanatical Captain Ahab and his hunt for the great white whale of the title, is now considered one of the classics of the American literature.
Individualism is an important part of the system of transcendental philosophy. If coupled with the transcendentalism color, it is transcendental individualism. Emerson is transcendental individualism advocates, stressing the importance of the individual, focusing on individuality, promoting individual independence and advocating self-reliance. Transcendental individualism to the rights of individuals as to the origin of the first, and to human dignity, and it helps people to build confidence and promote their development. Melville thought hard and constantly questioned, attacked individualism and the doctrine of the Holy Spirit through his works. This book reflects Melville’s thinking about the negative side of transcendentalism in United States, indicating that he was aware of the pursuit of the Holy Spirit which was full of dangers, because human and nature are the essence of evil. Lack of human knowledge, and limited capacity prevented people from obtaining the most fundamental truth in the world. Through this work, Melville was trying to prove that only love can save the world of callous numbness as well as extremes of transcendental individualism imprisoned people. Overall, in the book, Emerson's individualism advocated by Melville was the necessary complement, that is, people are confident, courageous and pursue their own freedom and should also take into account the freedom of others. We cannot blindly follow our own intuition, unless it is rational. At the same time, we should attach great importance to the cooperation between people, and have a comprehensive view of the world.
2.3.2 Individualism Reflected in “The Old Man and the Sea”
The character of Ahab in the “Moby Dick” is the typical one of the American pioneer era. The core of this character is the individualism cultivated by the American culture at that time. In the Hemingway's era, America had become a powerful and prosperous country dominated by the middle-class from a pioneer family of the savage. American spirit of individualism also experienced changes. These changes can be clearly told from the difference between those characters in Hemingway's works and those of previous writers. (Wylder, Delbert E.,1969). The hero, San Diego in “The Old Man and the Sea” is such a representative. The book describes a lonely old man going out for fishing, and one day he caught a huge fish but was unable to drag it to the shore. Alo
