ng the way his fish was eaten to a skeleton all the way round, and when he finally got onto the shore, his words “people only is defeated, but cannot be conquered” is the theme of the article. And it was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature finally. The Old Man has a child-like figure and is lonely, and all the rest is the vast and endless sea, which represents the nature. It is a struggle between lonely individuals and the nature, and human overcomes nature eventually. It promotes the western’s individual heroism. Individual heroism has a very long history in the west. Under the incentive of this philosophy, western culture considers individuals as the principal, and individual heroism shows the essential power of human nature. From the preparation before going out to the killing of Marlin fish and the whole process of fighting against each whale, all of these descriptions indicate lofty sense of personal will and moral dignity. The spirit of Hemingway's tough guy reflected in San Diego is no longer the crazy Ahab-blind personal will, but the inspired life will of conquering both others and selves when being faced with the nature as one member of the human beings.
Why doesn’t Ernest Hemingway let the elderly get the final victory? In the novel, the old man's words: “a person is not born to be defeated”, “people may be destroyed, but it cannot be defeated.” wanted to reveal the philosophy of “The old man and the sea”. When capturing great Marlin fish, he thought, “I want it to know how much people have, and one can endure the ordeal.” Clearly it shows that he dares to challenge the nature of courage, which is different from previous characters in the works of Hemingway’s. A truly strong person can be destroyed but not defeated, and he never gives up. This is what Hemingway tells us in “The Old Man and the Sea”.
In the novel of “Moby Dick”, Melville made one paranoid, proud hero Ahab who is lack of a comprehensive and objective view of the world. He has Emerson on the individualism advocated by many of the features of the self, which is a typical Emerson hero. Ahab was ego-centric and he liked to do things according to his own will in spite of the influence of natural forces. He looked on white whale as the incarnation of evil, chasing the white whale in a rude manner. During the hunt for the white whale, Ahab became more and more like the frightening white whale. “Crew fear Ahab than fear fate.” Ahab did not think of them as persons, and were cruel to deny the personality of suppressing the crew. Ahab’s creed is: “nothing is more sacred than me. Keeping my law is right, otherwise it is wrong.” His blind confidence a
