Oscar Wilde has expressed his aesthetics sufficiently in his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. His character Dorian Gray performed his theories of aesthetics and serves as an embodiment of Wildean aesthetics. Wilde held the view that life imitates art far more than art imitates life and that aesthetics is more important than ethics (Barthes, 167).

Wilde adhered to the ideology of aesthetics in his fairy tales and novel and he hoped to create the aesthetic image that could transcend morality. However, his works demonstrated that the character of his novel embodied not only his aesthetics but also some kinds of ethical norms. Despite that Wilde attempted to shape Dorian as an aesthetic image in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dorian turns out to be a character living in social reality and keeping inextricable links with morality. His evil itself has demonstrated that he can not exist without social morality.

In the novel there are three major characters, Dorian, Basil Hallward, and Lord Henry. Wilde wrote in a letter to Ralph Payne, “Basil Hallward is what I think I am; Lord Henry what the world thinks me; Dorian what I would like to be — in other ages, perhaps.” (Wilde, 122).The spirit of fighting and rebelling made Wilde challenge the Victorian morals. Lord Henry in The Picture of Dorian Gray is characterized with this kind of spirit. His witty phases destroy the conventional establishment of London Society, as he says: “Men marry because they are tired; women because they are curious; both are disappointed.” He is a dandy in The Picture of Dorian Gray, who is witty in speaking, quickly in mind, flamboyant in dressing, and wicked in heart.

Lord Henry has suggested Dorian to give up philanthropy and proposes that humanity takes itself too seriously, which is the world original sin, “The aim of life is self-development (Gomel, 75). To realize one’s nature perfectly- that is what each of us is here for. People are afraid of themselves, nowadays. They have forgotten the highest of all duties, the duty that one owes to one’s self. Of course they are charitable. But their own souls starve, and are naked.”
