1 Introduction
1.1 Theoretical Background
The concept of “learner autonomy” was put forward by Henri Holec in 1980s. In recent years, it has became a hot spot in the field of foreign language education. An increasing number of foreign language educators have attach more importance to learners’ autonomous learning ability, and began to explore its theoretical background, principals, methods and practical application. Chinese traditional education emphasized on the knowledge teaching and learning of language. However, it now changes the focus from teacher-centered to learner-centered. It has realized that the fundamental purpose of education nowadays is to enable students to become independent, self-controlled and effective learners. The teaching target is not only teaching our students languages kills but also autonomous learning competence, which can provide lifelong profit. The situation is, in China, the effect of English teaching—a course teaching, is always not satisfactory. As a result, the autonomous learning ability cannot be improved. Although the teaching philosophy of learner-centered has been deeply rooted, the result is beyond the expect all the time. With the development of psychology since 1970s, people gradually see the importance of meta-cognition in English and pay more and more attention to it. They believe that students who grasp meta-cognitive strategies must be a learner with exact direction, and have the competence of evaluating their own progress and achievements, and depicting blueprint for future learning. That is to say, meta-cognitive
strategy is the key to cultivate learner autonomy. For testing the relationship between meta-cognition and learner autonomy, scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of researches on their relationship and gave their conclusions.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
The purpose of the study is to analyze the current situation of university English learners’ meta-cognitive monitoring level and their learner autonomy level and to explore whether there is a significant correlation between them through both the quantitative and qualitative analysis.
