Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Rationale of the present research
It is beyond denial that meaning plays a significant role in translation studies. Seleskovitch (1980) points out that the object of translation is meaning. Larson (1997) holds that translation is meaning-based, namely, translation consists of transferring the meaning of the source language into the receptor language. Nida (1986:60) even goes further to say that translation means translating meaning. Therefore, it is safe to say that it is meaning that translators strive to convey. The definition as well as the classification of meaning, however, has been interpreted differently by different scholars. Based on the map-theoretical account of language, Liang (2008, 2010, 2012a, 2012b, 2013a, 2013b) proposes a tripartite taxonomy of meanings of experiential discourse, with an emphasis on phenomenal meaning. Phenomenal meaning, which is inherently rooted in empiricism and philosophy of mind, is characterized by three features, namely, what- it- is likeness, ineffability and multimodality. It is based on this phenomenal account of multimodality that the present research aims to explore the issue of literary translation. Literary works are rich in descriptions of sensory experience. It follows that the translation of literary works involves dealing with human sensory experience. Inspired by N ida’s effect-oriented theory, the present research aims to study, from the phenomenal perspective of multimodality, how to realize phenomenal effect in literary translation. The realization of phenomenal effect refers to the fact that the translator should translate so that the phenomenal effect of the translation on the target reader is roughly the same as that of the source text on the source reader. Equally important, the present research aims to find out advanced EFL learners’ overall ability to achieve phenomenal effect in literary translation, as well as the correlation and difference between their comprehending ability of experiential words and their corresponding translation proficiency.

Richards (1953:250) once declared that translation is “the most complex type of event yet produced in the evolution of the cosmos”.
