rather ethnically diverse section of Sudan. This region alone is composed of over one hundred different ethnic tribes. Some of these tribes are nomads and some of them are farmers but all of them are Muslims. It was really in 1989 when tensions within the Darfur region of Sudan really began to escalate. During this time a military general named Omar Bashir staged a military coup in Sudan to be able to take control of the country. In General Bashir’s taking control of Sudan this allowed The National Islamic Front to take control of the government. Being that the whole country of Sudan is consumed by all Muslims having an Islamic run government sparked regional tensions. With all of this tension going on within the region there was difficulty for the National Islamic Front government to take political control of the Darfur region of Sudan, so weapons began to be poured into Darfur. There also began to be an increased tension between the African farmers and the nomadic Arab tribes which began conflicts between the two. It would be in 2003 when the conflicts really began to worsen. There would be two Darfuri rebel movements that built up against the Sudanese government. These two rebel movements are known as the Sudan Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement. These two rebel groups took arms up against the government in Sudan with complaints over the marginalization of the Darfur area and the failure of the government to defend the sedentary people from the attacks of the incoming nomads. It would be the response of the Sudanese government that began the issue of genocide in Darfur. The government responded by sending out an Arab militia known as the Janjaweed to the region of Darfur. The Janjaweed and Sudanese forces attacked and destroyed over four hundred villages in the Darfur region forcing the citizens to flee from the region. The Janjaweed continued their destruction by killing African farmers and others in the region. The genocide so far has taken the lives of almost four hundred thousand Darfuris and left over two and a half million people without a home. [2] The United States soon became aware of what was going on in the region of Darfur. The United States was currently already involved in two conflicts of their own at the same time. For the United States oil corporations Sudan could be a new partner in importing oil into the United States. Sudan has a large oil reserve in regions of their country. Their oil reserves may possibly be as large as or even larger than that of the oil reserves of the Saudi Arabians. Also, Sudan has one of the three largest deposits of high purity uranium in the world. Along with their large deposits of natural gasses, Sudan has the world’s fourth largest copper deposits. For the United States the main concern though is the control of the oil in Sudan. With the other oil producing countries like Saudi Arabia the United States is able to control the oil policy in the countries.
