s sent nine different airlifts of plastic sheeting and blankets for those left homeless in Darfur. The contribution of all of the plastic sheeting enabled almost two hundred and fifty thousand people to be sheltered and all of the blankets were given to fifty seven thousand people. Another contribution that the US has made during this first year is over ten million dollars in assistance to the international and non-governmental organizations to fund their actions in Darfur. Some of these organizations that received these funds are the U.N. Children’s Fund, the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the World Health Organization, Medair, Save the Children-U.K., Save the Children-U.S., CARE, and the International Rescue Committee. Along with these contributions the U.S. State Department provided over eleven million dollars to organizations like the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the World Food Program, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, AirServ International, International Medical Corps, and the International Red Cross. [6] Over this first year of the crisis the United States concentrated its efforts to the resolution of the humanitarian issues in Darfur. It would not be until the years to come that the U.S. becomes more actively involved other than just sending relief funds.

 

In the next year the United States government would begin to pressure the Sudanese government to make changes in Darfur. This all began with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. What the Comprehensive Peace Agreement is a series of meetings between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) to find a consensus for the issues that have been taking place for the past several years even previous to the genocide in Darfur. The CPA was finally signed on January 9, 2005 and this would be the beginning of ending the ongoing conflicts in Sudan. Since both of the parties signed this agreement the two groups will now acknowledge that the successful execution of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement should provide a new basis for a new way of governing in Sudan that will help to create a good foundation to preserve peace and to allow the government and the SPLA to unify or attempt to co-exist and will stick to the letter and spirit of the CPA will allow for a lasting peace, security for all, justice and equality in the Sudan. [7] Now that this agreement is signed it is necessary for the United States and the rest of the international community to make sure that the guidelines of the CPA are implemented and followed in a fair and timely manner. The United States took the bull by the horns in this situation and they took a leadership role for the implementation of the CPA to make sure that the agreement is on the right path and progress is being made to create peace in Sudan. According to Ruth Messinger, “The successful implementation of the CPA must be at the heart of any U.S. policy concerning Sudan, as must peace and security for the millions who continue to suffer in Darfur.
