An Analysis of Cross-Cultural Influence upon International Business Acquisition
1. Introduction
1.1 Research background
With the more and more active international trade and commerce, mergers and acquisitions (M&As) across borders are becoming very frequent. They occur in a wide range of different industries, from manufacturing to tertiary. With the intensified international co-operation and integration, culture exchange has become a striking phenomenon in international business management. Cross-border business acquisitions, which occur in an international business environment, is especially impacted by cross-cultural communication strategies (Bairoch, Kozul-Wright and Richard, 1996). Nowadays, an increasing number of M&As are influenced by this process of cultural exchange between different nations. By and large, international business acquisition accelerated the pace of the economic development in the whole world. Data have shown that international business M&As are important factors for the integration of the world economy (Theodore, 1985). However, there are still a lot of acquisition cases ended in failure. So, one question seems to be important for international business to answer, which is what the barrier for cross-border business acquisition is.
In analysing the reasons for the failure of cross-border business M&A, peoplehttps://www.51lunwen.org/guojimaoyi/2011/0315/0852335876.html have found the important role of culture that has influenced almost every aspect of business acquisition and integration on international scale. In today’s world, the focus on the integration of world economy and international culture has been prevailing but, on the other hand, the specific nature of national tradition and individual business cultures has largely been neglected. In this dissertation, the author tries to analyse the importance of cultural influence upon international M&As through the failure of Coco Cola’s acquisition of China’s Huiyuan Juice Group in particular. In the meanwhile, to enrich the in-depth discussion, successful M&A examples will also be cited and analyzed.
