Maritime clusters in Shanghai maritime sectors

Abstract
There is a growing awareness about the relationship between industry competitiveness and location attractiveness. This relationship implies that it is crucial for a region or a country to create a favorable business environment to attract industries, as this activity in turn reinforces the overall competitive advantages of the region or the nation. The maritime cluster in this thesis is deemed as an organic integration involving a variety of industries, such as shipping, shipbuilding, maritime services, port operations, etc. Nowadays, given the status of the maritime industries has been significantly enhanced, countries are engaging into promote their domestic maritime clusters, with the aim to compete for the predominant status in terms of global resource allocation.
Chinese government has made great efforts to promote its maritime clusters, especially in Shanghai area. The first aim of the thesis is to evaluate the economic significance of common a maritime cluster and the interdependent relationships between its participants. This can be regarded as the necessities and importance to build an international maritime cluster in Shanghai. As for the second aim of the thesis, it is to explore the factors that contribute to https://www.51lunwen.org/mba/2012/0222/1116194125.html the attractiveness of the Shanghai maritime cluster. In this part, the UK maritime cluster is introduced for comparison. Based on analyses of strength and weakness in both maritime clusters, the forerunner’s successful experience can be identified, which can be used to accelerate the constructions of the Shanghai maritime cluster.
