Multimedia Projects Making Local Stories Global

The mono-directional broadcasting model of traditional media outlets is evolving into a peer-to-peer communication web, where content is increasingly generated and distributed by consumers. Digital storytelling - encompassing video, audio, photographs, graphics and text - is emerging as an increasingly popular model for citizen journalists and creative storytellers alike. Backpack journalism is the professional equivalent, where trained journalists employ multimedia techniques to tell stories on a hyper-local level, often to represent a microcosmic view of a wider social issue or phenomenon. Multimedia is ideal for covering multi-faceted stories of social change and civic engagement, and particularly suitable for telling stories about people, as it enables the journalist to capture each angle of the story using the medium most appropriate to that angle, the one which can present it in the most compelling and informative way.

How multimedia stories work

In 2005, former reporter for NBC Kevin Sites set out with a backpack full of $10,000 worth of equipment, aiming to tell the stories of the millions of voiceless victims of war (Martyn, 2009). Employed as Yahoo!'s first news reporter, Sites visited 'every place listed by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London as a site of armed conflict' (Campbell, 2005) in the space of twelve months, gathering a core audience of two million online viewers each week (Meeks, 2006). He is still steadfastly committed to the use of multimedia to represent all facets of war, and now believes that one single medium could simply not do justice to the stories that he has to tell. 'We use these elements of multimedia storytelling because our subjects deserve it. They have to have this kind of coverage. It's just up to us how we are going to provide it, with one person or with three.' (Sites, 2006).

According to Sites, the first consideration when approaching a story which will be presented on multi-media platforms is to decide which medium will form the core of the story, and concentrate on capturing the essence of the story in that medium first. As his stories for Yahoo! primarily revolved around a 1200 word text article, he would take down the details in a traditional reporter's notebook for the article first, just as a traditional print reporter would. Video would be used 'not to shoot talking heads, not to shoot interviews - unless they are really compelling - but to shoot motion, music, things that move, things that are inherently dramatic.' (Sites, 2006). Video is also useful for taking the audience to a place central to the story, as video is best equipped to capture sights, sounds and atmosphere. Sites would use still photographs for capturing faces论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
