In 2003, Reid Hoffman assembled the founding team and started to contact with the VCs to get venture capital, and in November 2003, they got $4.7 million from Sequoia Capital. Before IPO, LinkedIn also got around $100 million investment from Sequoia Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partner. And in May 2011, LinkedIn went public, the price of IPO is $45.

LinkedIn doesn’t have a particular target field of employment, but most of the members of the website are white collars. Thus, the website can provide more white collars to the employers. Also the website can provide more value to the companies who have international business or oversea brands and the companies who are growing super fast. LinkedIn’s members are all over the world, if a company wants to hire employees overseas, LinkedIn is an effective and economic way. Also, for the fast growing company, they may need some experienced employees, because LinkedIn has a very big database of professional persons, both seeking jobs and not seeking for jobs, thus they can find better candidates with low cost compared to the headhunter.

There are two main advantages of LinkedIn. One is that since the members are linked to their social groups, their professional profiles are more creditable and real-time updating. And because the members are using this website to find jobs, they tend to show more information about their skills, specialty, and their interests, and that gives the recruiters more useful information to make the recruitment more effective. The other one is that LinkedIn is a big and low cost headhunter who grasps a huge number of talents. LinkedIn can provide potential candidates who are passive or silent for recruiters to contact. It enlarges the range of the candidates the recruiters are searching.

The problem with present job hunting with social media is that the applicants are lacking the channels to build connections and to communicate with the recruiters. When the applicants use Facebook or Twitter to find jobs, it is not easy for them to find the right person to contact or to find a place to present their profile.
