1.1 Research Motivation研究动机
Food safety is closely linked to the survival and development of human beings. After joining the World Trade Organization, especially on thebackground of China successfully hosting the Olympic Games in Beijing, China is watched attentively bythe whole world, and the food safety is raised to a new height that has never been to. China’s exports ofagricultural products and foods face more serious challenges. In recent years, the frequent occurrences offood safety events cause negative influence to the foreign trades.Most of the main media at home and abroad reported the events of China’s food safety. Newspapersare an important component of the mass media, which have become the inseparable part of people’s life inmodern society. People can get much information and knowledge from newspapers and their attitudes areinfluenced by them. It was generally believed that news reports were objective and unprejudiced. But nowmore and more scholars believe that news reports are not always neutral and some ideologies are embeddedin them.Critical discourse analysis (CDA for short) is a newly developed branch of discourse analysis. It aimsto discover the relationship between language, power and ideology from the perspectives of linguistics,sociology and psychology. In the past three decades, some critical discourse analysts have madetremendous contributions to revealing the relationship between language and ideology in news reports(Fairclough, 1995a). The traditional methodological approach of CDA focuses on the in-depth analysis oflimited amounts of texts which are drawn only by the analysts’ intuition. The pure qualitative analysis ofcritical discourse analysis has got more and more criticism. A corpus which is machine-readable format,viewable and analyzable by software offers context information and language environment. Corpus-basedapproach can overcome the limitations of merely focusing on small numbers of texts in critical discourseanalysis.So the author will combine the qualitative study of traditional critical discourse analysis with thequantitative study of corpus linguistics in order to remedy traditional CDA approach’s deficiency, tobroaden the scope of CDA studies and pave the way for other studies.The news reports on China’s food safety have been studied in various relevant fields, includingeconomy, law, public administration, agriculture, medicine health, and so on. Up to now, very few studieshave been conducted from a linguistic perspective. Therefore, this research will make an effort to apply theframework of CDA to the analysis of news reports on China’s food safety in American newspapers.

1.2 Research Objectives研究目标
The objectives of this research include three aspects.
