1.2 Objectives and significances of the study研究目标和意义
As a special type of speech act, humor is studied under the framework of Speech ActTheory in this thesis. Combining Austin and Searle’s (1975) Speech Act Theory and Hay’s(2000) category of the humor strategies, this thesis analyzes the humorous utterances in theAmerican sitcom The Big Bang Theory.By analyzing conversational humor in this sitcom, the objective of this thesis is to find outhow verbal humor is produced and what illocutionary acts are most extensively used. It intendsto find out what perlocutionary acts are used mostly to perform humor and people use whatkind of strategies to achieve humorous effect.The significance of the study is that it will be of great importance to English leaning andteaching. Students who use this TV play as a tool to learn English will deepen theircomprehension of the language use of the sitcom. They will learn communication skills andhumor mechanism. With the study of the sitcom, students can learn to produce humor in dailylife. It will then improve their listening and speaking abilities. The American sitcom providesthe up-to-date and authentic materials. The teachers can use this material as the leaningresources in class. Through imitation and practice, it will increase the interaction betweenteachers and students. Appropriate humor can enhance human relationships and amelioratecommunication atmosphere.

1.3 Outline of the thesis论文结构
This section deals with the main contents of this research, and outlines what each chaptercontains.Chapter One is the research rationale, objectives and the overall design of the thesis.Chapter Two offers an overview of humor such as its definition, genres, and gives the maintheories from the perspective the Speech Acts Theory, which prepares the theoretical groundfor research in later chapters. Chapter Three states research questions and methodology. Datacollection and processing, analysis method will be given. Chapter Four is the analysis ofhumorous utterances. It illustrates the illocutionary acts of humorous utterances in theAmerican sitcom The Big Bang Theory and analyzes the statistics in the data to see how humoris involved. This chapter also explores the perlocutionary acts, which fall into threecategories---Solidarity, Aggression, Defense with examples and statistical analysis. ChapterFive focuses on the strategic use of verbally expressed humor in communication. Chapter Sixdraws a conclusion out of the findings in the previous chapters and points out the implicationand limitation of the present study as well as the suggestions for future research.
