My Special Experience in an Interview
As a journalism graduate of University of California, Los Angeles, I was looking for my first job. Among many my favorite companies, I chose a plane media company and send them my resume. The interview was carried out according to the schedule. Maybe it was difficult for the interviewer to derive the information from my name that I am an Indian, when he first saw me, he seemed to be disappointed, but he was still very polite to ask me some questions. After asking some basic questions, he explained to me that, it was a media which dealt with entertainment news specially, they needed to have an access to some international, fashion news figures and events, so they wanted to hire a staff with more international look. When I heard this, I had some confusion at first, but I did not want to give up, I responded, before I went to attend the interview, I learned a lot about this company, it is a print media company, and what I ask for was just behind-the-scenes work, I thought that the so-called face should not affect my work. The interviewer listened to my words, he seemed to be persuaded. He thought for a while and continued that the position that I applies was very important in their company, and only a staff was needed for the position, so they intended to find a person who had a deep understanding of American entertainment culture and language, he was afraid of that I couldn’t satisfy the requirement, they had other jobs I might need to try. I seemed to be irritated by hearing the interviewer's remarks. I responded, I grew up in the United States spent my high school and college time here, I had a very deep understanding about culture and language of the United States, and the position what I asked for was consistent with my major, and my professional achievement in school was very good and I also had some work experience, so I thought that I was qualified for the job. The interviewer read my resume again and maybe he also recognized my professional competence. He was noncommittal on my explanation, he thought and said: nice to meet you, our company either refuses your or allows you to work here with less salaries than other employee’, you can make your own choice. Although I needed the job urgently, I thought that if I chose to accept this position, it showed that I agreed with the interviewer’s acts of discrimination, I finally gave up this chance.
