Generally speaking, leader is someone who can influence others and who has managerial authority. For example, head of department or even chief executive officer in a company are common leaders in society.
Leadership is defined as a process of social influence whereby a leader steers members of a group towards a goal (bryman, 1992). Yukl (1998)
notes that influence over followers is the essence of leadership. Influence processes are important for understanding how managers motivate subordinates’ commitment and extra effort (Bass, 1985). Ann (1992) believes that the influence that today’s leader such as manager or supervisor have on employee motivation make the teamwork more successful and effective. Not only influence by leader is essential factor to help achieving the goals of the team, but also motivation by leader. Motivation is defined as a passion to work for motives that go beyond money or status or a propensity to pursue goals with energy and persistence. Leadership effectiveness is critically contingent on, leaders’ capability to motivate followers toward collective goals or a collective mission or vision (Shamir, Zakay, Breinin, & Popper, 1998). In this
essay, the importance of the influence and motivation of leaders to followers will be discussed while relevant theories and real-life example will be analyzed in the discussion.
