Chapter l Introduction 
    The emergence and growth of mass Media has further narrowed the interpersonal boundaries. From books to Internet, the persuasiveness of mass communication in our day-to-day lives enhances our ability to understand the outer world. It should be pointed out that newspapers online give English learners the chance to get much more access to English news information.
1.1 Aim of This Study
      News discourse in newspaper has been the invariable focus of scholars' or linguists' attention. China Daily is China's one of largest English news websites, and every day there are at least 5,500,000 hits. BBC News is the UK's one of most influential news websites in English, and there are almost a million hits a day. Internet exchanges are more and more known. Every day, the global Internet passes its 40-50 million users the news, which surpasses more than 1,600 newspapers daily published. When Internet users browse English news online which is justified as different media styles on the surface, they fail to make a systematic explanation. When readers look through English newspapers, there is a clear need for us to differentiate the styles.
    News English is a carrier where a huge number of sub-varieties are put into effect. A majority of earlier researchers have undertaken extensive and in-depth researches on news English in that news reports have invariably captured the eyeball of researchers. A good many previous researches into news reports have been primarily carried out from the point of view of traditional stylistics, but only a fraction of comparative study of the stylistic features of news reports on the strengths of Systemic-Functional Grammar has been engaged in.
      Halliday's Systemic-Functional Grammar is a theory founded on the principle that Systemic-Functional Grammar is a grammar of use for application. It enables us to understand how language itself is constituted and to put forward adequate interpretations about how language itself is applied. Halliday (1994:16) argues in a forceful tone that `a discourse analysis that is not based on grammar is not an analysis at all'.We, in this thesis, make a comparative analysis of the stylistic traits of English news reports between China Daily com and BBC NEWS.com based on the theory of Systemic-Functional Grammar. It is aimed at arousing researchers' interest in the studies on the characteristics of sub-varieties of news English and enhancing the deeper understanding about news English.
