Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research background
Metaphor is a common phenomenon in people's daily life. Lackoff and Johnson (1980) state that metaphor is pervasive in people's daily life, not just in language but also in thought and action. The research on the metaphor can be traced back to the Ancient Greek. It is said that Aristotle is the first scholar who studies the metaphor systematically,  and his research on the metaphor is from the perspective of rhetoric and stylistic. From then on, scholars from other different academic fields approach the metaphor from different aspects and establish a rain of theories about metaphor. With the deep study on the metaphor, it has become a multi-discipline topic, and the research on the metaphor has been broadened and has expanded to the disciplines of pragmatics, cognition, and functional grammar in the recent years. However, most of the research on metaphor is about the lexical metaphor or the rhetorical metaphor. Some scholars notice the metaphor from another perspective, such as Halliday, the founder of systemic-functional grammar, first puts forward the grammatical metaphor in A} troductio} of Fu}ctio}al Grammar published in 1985. His theory of the grammatical metaphor is quite different from the previous study on the metaphor and considered to be a milestone in the study of the metaphor, which also makes the scope of metaphor not confined to the lexical level. From then on, many scholars both at home and abroad are interested in grammatical metaphor such as Hu Zhuanglin (1996), Zhu Yongsheng (2000), Yan Shiqing (2000),Wenfang (2001), Ravelli Lousie (2001), Thompson Geoff (2000) and Martin,J.R.(1991).The grammatical metaphor has exerted attraction for scholars since its birth. Most of the researches center majorly upon the analysis of the text on conducted on the political news. As we all know the that science and technology texts, but few have been transmits news and information to people. As a genre the political news is vital in people's daily life, as it of text, political news is supposed to have its own features in terms of the grammatical metaphor, and therefore, it is worthwhile to take the BBC English political news as the texts for analysis in an attempt to find out the characteristics of grammatical metaphor.

1.2 Research objectives
This thesis is devoted to analyzing of the BBC English political news from the perspective of grammatical metaphor under the theoretical framework of the theory proposed by Halliday. The present study aims to achieve the following objectives.
(1) It attempts to investigate the features that the BBC English political news have concerning the grammatical metaphor.
(2) This study aims to demonstrate the way how the grammatical metaphor causes rank shifts in the BBC English political news.
(3) This research tries to explore the functions that the grammatical metaphor has in the BBC English
political news.

1.3 Organization of the thesis
The research adopts Halliday's theory of the grammatical metaphor to decode the BBC English political news, and this thesis includes the following parts. Chapter One is the introduction of the whole research. It gives a general account of the research background, the objectives of the study and the organization of the thesis.  Chapter Two is the literature review of this research.
