1.1 Origin of the Study

Languages are real reflection of people'sthoughts and the objective world, thus vagueness is inevitable in all languages.However, as an inherent characteristic of natural languages, vagueness hadn't rousedattention until 1960s' when Zadeh first proposed the fuzzy set theory. He integratedvagueness into mathematical research, and analyzed the existence of fuzzy languageat the semantic level. Based on his theory, another renowned mathematician LakeofFcame up with the first exact definition of hedges; his definition is widely acceptedeven in academic circles nowadays. Hedge, as an indispensable part of vaguelanguage, can modify the range or truth value of proposition, making languageexpressions more flexible, polite, proper, and effective in both verbal and writtencommunications. In 1970s', the linguistic study of hedges was dominated bysemantics. When it came to 1980，s， more researches were conducted from the anglesof sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and discourse analysis. In recent years, manyrenowned scholars poured attentions to the study of hedges in scientific articles andacademic papers. Many of them turned to materials in hard Science such as molecularbiology. Since 1990s, researches in this aspect have gained significant achievements.Among these scholars, Salager-Meyer and Hyland are two extraordinaryrepresentatives. They have published a series of works to explore usage and functionof hedges in scientific discourse, and meanwhile, revealing the significance of theirresearches. Markkannen/Schroder also pointed out that convention of scientificwriting and styles of arguments change with specific cultural backgrounds, whichmeans culture exerts profound influences on hedging usage.
In recent years, scholars' efforts in analyzing pragmatic functions of hedges indifferent genres have inspired language learners and users effectively. Therefore, thepragmatic usage and functions of hedges are studied by more researchers in more types of writing. Hedges in news reports occur occasionally with distinguishingfeatures, which are worth noticing by linguists and language-related workers such aswriters and translators. However, the study of hedges in news reports is still limitedand no results are acknowledged widely, especially the comparison of hedges inEnglish news written by Americans and Chinese. The present research aims atpresenting scientific data through studying features and functions of hedges in CENand AEN, thus exposes the mystery of idiomatic hedging usage to language learnersand researchers.

1.2 Significance of the Study
