Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
As an integral part of our lives for the general public，mass Media news, whether print or broadcast, provides us with the most timely，convenient way of knowing the outside world beyond our own, exchanging and communicating with other people from thesame or a different community and thereby fitting ourselves with an appropriate role in the whole society. Undoubtedly, news has proved significance not only as source of knowledge and information but also as a research subject which draws considerable attention among journalists，media researchers, political groups and more. This study identifies itself as belonging to research of the news media language from the perspective of linguistics. Specifically it is turned to an important subtype of English news which is carried by the audio system and which shows quite different properties while sharing aspects in common with print news.Defined by the deep-rooted social natures, it had long been argued that all human activities require interaction with and participation of others.

When it comes to our basiccommunication tool of language, this idea is typically reflected in Bakhtin's view of verbalcommunication (1973，1981) and Lemke (1992) and Fairclough's interpretation of it(1992), which holds that language is not an abstract system，utterances and understandingare not unilateral process of thought expression on the part of the speaker only but theresult of a bilateral or multilateral social event involving attention and responses embeddedin another utterance or various utterances. The term "dialogicality" will be elaborated inthe analysis to represent what has been seen as the essence of all human verbalcommunication and even of human existence and all their activities.

Given this premise, it makes perfect sense when Ym trying to associate the dialogicnature with radio English news, a particular type of the English language characterized byjcertain features both of language use and of the medium. Concentration on descriptions ofIdialogue going on between one voice and others inevitably foregrounds another question about the widely-believed objective way of news reporting in journalism.As a vital mechanism for the dissemination of information, news is claimed to be aneutral reproduction of reality with everything presented impartially. Yet this assumption isfar from satisfactory despite such admissions as made by Carter and Nash that "After all，newspaper reports should ideally report the facts in as core a vocabulary as possible，，（1990,P. 64). More often than not，news takes on a role in exercising political and culturalinfluence through its careful choice of wordings usually conditioned by the economic basis，social values and the conventions of news coverage etc. Considering the issue from thispoint of view, it's not problematic to say some declaratives made directly by the author innews texts mostly carry some forms of subjective beliefs.
