摘要:News English has always been an important material for English learners, which leads the trend of language changes. Taking News English as an example toexplore English Listening skills is a pragmatic trial.
1. Listening Comprehension and Its differences from Ordinary Listening
Listening comprehension plays as a core part in this thesis, which determines theperformances of understanding in News English. Many listeners may haveexperienced that they had difficulties in listening to news English featured by widetopics, unpredictability, different dialects as well as high density of information, etc. This Chapter will mainly focus on the importance of listening comprehension andintroduce its barriers from linguistic and extra-linguistic levels so as to provide somepractical suggestions in the following chapter. It should be clarified at the very beginning that the processes of listening andlistening comprehension are totally different: listening is a process which requiresmere listening to the text and does not necessarily perform interpreting or reaction tothe message, and listening comprehension is a process featuring overall understandingof the text, information identification and screening, logic reorganization, etc.Listening comprehension here in the study refers to the way listeners select and graspinformation that stems from the auditory contents in News English in order to renderan overall understanding and comprehension of what reporters say. This point of viewcomes from second-language theory which regards listening to spoken language as anactive, multiple and complex process in which listeners must concentrate upon aspectsof aural input, reconstruct meaning, and establish relations between what they hearand their existing knowledge.

2. Barriers in Listening Comprehension
The basic elements of language such as pronunciation, vocabulary, collocationsand sentence structure always play vital role in any aspect for language study, inparticular, for listening comprehension. The writer will discuss linguistic barriers fromthe perspective of phonetic, lexical, collocation and syntactic levels. As we all know, language is perceived through its pronunciation at the beginning.During the process of listening, “once people receive the sound of words, picturesillustrating those words often occur in our mind.” The priority in the process oflistening comprehension should be distinguishing sounds and making sense. As aresult, listeners will fail in understanding once being troubled in identifying thesounds. It is always difficult for a non-native speaker to distinguish each phoneticsymbol of a language. Among the enduring history of its evolvement, English hasshaped mature phonetic system featured by special rules and habits, for example:liaison, incomplete explosion, assimilation, etc. In addition, word and sentence stress, accent as well as intonation may confuse listeners too. Limited by those factors, listeners always meet with such situation: they know each word in the sentence, but itis also hard to identify them in listening practice. In this part, the author will discoverphonetic obstacles in the aspects of liaison, stress and accent.
