Chapter III Strategies of Listening Comprehension
1. Association and Guessing
Association and guessing serve as the basic features of human mental activity.Association and guessing are no doubt applied to strengthen listeners’ comprehensionof what they heard in the process of listening comprehension. Psycholinguistics holds the view that “comprehension means establishingmeaning according to voices and words, comprehension process represents a processof establishing meaning, listening comprehension is a process of establishing meaningaccording to voices. As a result, a good capability of association is inevitable inlistening comprehension. A listener with skilled capability of association is able totransform disordered information into concrete figures and set up association withsome background knowledge which already exists in their mind so as to achievecomprehension.In the process of listening comprehension, association refers to pre-listeningprediction, listening comprehension and memory for listening. Pre-listeningprediction aims to activate background information and suppose listening materials,which will greatly alleviate burden for listening comprehension.There are three major principles of association to follow: correlated association,contrary association and similar association.

Conclusion
News English has always been an important material for English learners,which leads the trend of language changes. Taking News English as an example toexplore English Listening skills is a pragmatic trial.In this thesis, the stylistic characteristics of News English are introduced indetail from the lexical, syntactic and structural levels. Then, listening comprehension,as a key aspect of the study, is introduced in Chapter II, here listening comprehensionis quite different from regular listening in the process of language learning, listeningcomprehension in this text mainly focuses on listening for interpreting. As a result,listening comprehension for interpreting and its previous studies are firstly illustratedin Chapter II. When discussing what listening comprehension for interpreting is,barriers of listening comprehension no doubt occur. In the following part of thischapter, barriers in listening comprehension are thoroughly discussed from linguisticlevel and extra-linguistic level. When introducing the phonetic barriers, the authoralso takes this opportunity to make a brief introduction of the phonetic characteristicsof BBC, making this study more targeted. The function of Chapter III—strategies oflistening comprehension is the most important part of this thesis, providing pragmaticsolutions to those above mentioned barriers.
