It is originally frompainting which means the special sections against the background. Prague school linguists,Leech, Short and Halliday applied the foregrounding to the linguistics and developed thetheory. Till now Halliday thought that foregrounding is "motivated prominence" from theview of function. The function of language in some text is relative to the usage of thelanguage. It reveals the aims of the communication. And language is used to achieve thedifferent functions. This means foregrounding is to use unusual, unconventional andoverregular language which is far from the the language standard.

Whenreading or seeing and hearing the news, audiences can only have a delay compensationeffect. Soft news refers to the social news, popular science articles, essays, etc, which is fullof kindness, easiness and infectivity, easy to make the audiences audio-visual and sensorystimulation and produce immediate payment effect. Social news roughly belongs to Englishsoft news. Now, China has more frequent communication with the world. When the foreigncountries are learning of China，Chinese also should throw their eyes into the world toknow of the development of the world. And then it becomes more important to research thelanguage features of the English soft news.Based on the current research situation of foregrounding and soft news, in this thesisthe author attempts to take advantage of the theory of foregrounding and Reference on theresults of other researchers to discuss soft news in a new field of vision. Foregroundingenlightenment to translation is going to be explored and references for soft news productionare provided.
