Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research background of the study
With the development of mass media, English news reports, as a special kind ofdiscourse, has been drawn more and more attention in daily life, for more and more peopleare learning English either for academic purpose or for economic and political purpose.People read newspaper to get to know what is happening around us and through the world.Readers can get in touch with the daily, economic and political news events of the wholeworld by reading newspapers. With the development of information industry, news reportsare becoming the window to the outside the world.English news report differs from other types of discourse with its special features andstructure and functions in its unique way. The analysis of English new report can behelpful for people to understand what is happening in the world. It plays a significant rolein people’s life. News report has become a popular research focus. Many researchers andscholars study it from various perspectives of structure analysis, content analysis andcritical analysis and so on. However, in the mass media field, focus has been put on effectson receivers, news production process, the news institutions, the relation between mediaand society and culture. In the linguistic field, researcher began to study news report froma perspective of systemic functional grammar, though the application of it in newsdiscourse is relatively immature and less systematic.This thesis is aimed to make a constructive functional genre analysis of English newsreports under the framework of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) andSwales and Bhatia’s move theory. To be specific, the thesis attempts to study the genericfeatures of news reports and to find out the realization of the three meta-functions ---ideational, interpersonal and textual functions in this genre. Therefore, this study is ofnecessity and high value as a new perspective for genre analysis and the application ofSystemic Functional Grammar.

1.2 Significance of the study
This study shall make theoretical and practical contribution to the application ofsystemic functional grammar and the research on genre features of English news report.First, it may provide valuable Reference for the study of systemic functional grammar andgenre analysis in journalistic English. Though some researchers have made some efforts inthis field, the author attempts to carry out a more comprehensive and thoroughinvestigation on it. Meanwhile, it may prove the reliability and feasibility of SFG inapplying to discourse analysis. In other words, SFG can certainly become the frameworkof discourse analysis. Second, it is also of significance to the teaching reading and writingEnglish news reports. It provides a model to analyze news reports on every level of alanguage, relating the language use to its function, which is helpful to English learners toget insights about the relationship between linguistic units and discourse meaning, andhence they can gain the knowledge of the efficient methods of reading English newsreports and stimulate their English learning and acquisition.
