Preface
(Esterhuizen Pet al.,2006)In order to emphasize professional manner in which a nurse behaves within nursing, it is widely accepted that an instrument is needed to measure the integral of the nursing profession (Bisholt B K M et al., 2012). The code of conduct for nurses of New Zealand is polished by the Nursing Council under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003,which sets out the basal expectation for practiced nurse, which they should uphold all the time in order to ensure the profession of nursing. The code of conduct provides legally and professionally guidance on the behavior for all the nurses, and it also can discern the responsibilities, concerns and professional boundaries of the nursing (Professional Boundaries of New Zealand, 2012). The nurses are encouraged to use the code of conduct to examine their own practice and meet the requirements for registration (Fowler M D M et al., 2008). And the codes suggested the nurses to use them as an ethical model to solve moral and ethical problems during nursing (Esterhuizen Pet al., 2006)................
Principle and practice:
Privacy is a part of the basic human rights, and which controls the access to his or her personal information, such as life experience, physically status, clinical records, family affairs and property and so on (Gastin L O et al., 1994). Privacy relates to the health consumer’s expectation and right to be treated with dignity and respect (Chadwick A et al., 2012). Many countries consider the respect of health consumers’ privacy as an important content and write into the nursing codes as a principle (American nurses association, 2008; Canadian Nurses association, 2008, etc.)................
Breach and consequences
The purpose of the principle is to offer a guidance for nurses in protecting privacy and confidentiality and avoid to a breach in professional nursing. Any breach of this principle, intentional or unintentional inappropriate use of health consumers’ information would result in some badconsequences (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2011).
Ongoing advances in Internet-based technologies, including social and electronicmedia, have increased the likelihood of potential and unintentional breaches of consumers’ information.Nurses may breach privacy or confidentialityby posting photo groupsand videos of consumers, or texting through social media sites and apps (Workers N A et al., 2008).Breaches of information can have serious impact on both health consumers and the nurseswithin financial and organizational impact (Bansal G et al., 2010). ..................
