ABSTRACT

Amy Tan is a popular writer of dazzling talent in Chinese-American literary world. As her prominent representative work, The Joy Luck Club caused an immediate sensation after its publication and won the wide acclaim from both readers and critics, and established an important literary position in American literature.
Basing on her own life experiences, her great insight, and super writing skill, Tan gives us a vivid picture of mother-daughter relationship in The Joy Luck Club. The novel deeply reflects the third-world women struggling to survive in the white-centric American society.
By adopting the feminism theory，the paper analyzes the four mothers and daughters in The Joy Luck Club: Suyuan and Jingmei, Anmei and Rose, Lindo and Waverly, Yingying and Lena. It reveals how they formed the conscious of fighting for their own fates under the social environment in which women suffered from oppression and discrimination. Feminist theory emerged in the US in the 1970s following only a decade behind the rise of the US women's movement in the 1960s. It aims to achieve gender equality of mankind. Through the origin、background and features of feminism，the paper compares the fates of mothers and daughters in order to present how they made efforts in the pursuit of independence and self-esteem to the readers. Finally it comes to the conclusion that: Women should not submit to humiliation or resign themselves to oppression. Only through independence could they get the political and economic equality in social life.
