Abstract

As we all know, it is difficult for children to understand sentence with Wh movement. In such type of sentence, the object can cross a subject. But whether a sentence without Wh movement is a problematic source for children’s sentence comprehension and whether a clause with subject moving across an object still remain to be question that need to be tested. This test has never been done by any other scholars before. Therefore, the author makes a comparison between coordinated structures with crossing dependencies and coordinated structures without a dependency as well as coordinated structures having a dependency but no crossing. The author also makes contrast between Wh movements with crossing dependencies, which is also known as object relative clause, and Wh movements without crossing dependencies, which is also identified as subject relative clause. And finally the author comes to conclude that not all Wh movements are hard for kids to know its meaning well. The subject relative clause in which nothing can cross over the object is an easy one that children have good performance in understanding. And children not only are stumped by correct comprehension of Wh movement, but also play poor performance in the comprehension of coordination. In such kind of coordination, the subject can cross over an object. This is labeled by the author as crossing dependency. It is the crossing dependency that makes children have difficulties in understanding these relevant types of sentences. In a word, children can not well understand the coordination and relative clause with crossing dependency.
