Is the ‘ancient hatreds’ thesis an adequate explanation of contemporary ethnic violence?
This paper will examine the primordialist argument, which posits代写留学论文contemporary violence as the result of ‘ancient hatreds’ between ethnic groups, arguing that it provides an insufficient explanation for contemporary violence. An alternative explanation, in which ethnic identity is used instrumentally by leaders and elites to provoke violence from which they will reap benefits, or results from the dynamic between this process and the rational actions of those ‘on the ground’, is considered. The paper argues that both explanations offer an insufficient explanation of contemporary conflict, due to their rationalist premises, although they each highlight some important features which could inform a more comprehensive theory.
The paper suggests that constructivist approaches come closer to providing such a theory of the links between ethnicity and violence. By avoiding the essentialist assumptions of the previous two perspectives, this consider agents and structures to be mutually constitutive, and relates violence a dynamic process of identity (re)construction which is socially and culturally embedded. Here the symbolic and performative qualities of violence, which seem to add insight, are considered.
