Week 5 (March 27)

This week’s Research Topic is “The relationship between ethnic homeland and overseas co-ethnics (in another word, the relationship between nation-states and their overseas nationals/co-ethnics): the cases of South Korea and Japan and their overseas co-ethnics”

Hypothesis: “Nation-states and ethnic homelands normally do not have much reason to pay attention to their overseas ethics who became permanent residents/citizens of other countries.”

Relevant Questions

(1) Historically, how overseas nationals (Chinese, Japanese or Koreans) have been viewed by the states and peoples of their ethnic homelands? 
(2) When, in what circumstances, and which poiltics overseas co-ethnics/nationals (sometimes they could be divided among themselves) do want to be connected to their ethnic homelands?
(3) How would globalisation impact on such relationship? 
(4) Recently, both Japanese and South Korean governments decided to give voting rights to their overseas nationals/co-ethnics. What would be the reasons? 

Week 6 (April 3)

Assignment for Week 6

Choose one country, either Korea or Japan (or China if you specialise on China) and conduct basic research on the following questions:  

(1) When, in what circumstances, and which overseas co-ethnics/nationals (sometimes they could be divided among themselves) do want to be connected to their ethnic homelands? Think about this question while collecting some actual cases in which overseas nationals/co-ethnics try to be connected to their ethnic homelands.
(2) Are there any relevant researches on this topic? Conduct library or online database research and list at least 10 academic items on this topic. The items could be in languages other than English.
(3) What existing theories or theoretical frame works can be applied to this research topic do you think?
(4) In your mind, what would be the best way to answer the questions (in a sense, methodologies) raised above?
