It can be found through relevant data that Canada is really too economically dependent on the United States. After entering into NAFTA, the economic link between Canada and the United States has been enhanced. Canadian exports to the United States increase yearly. Canada is an industrialized country with extensive resources, the main features of its economy is highly dependent on external demand, especially the demand for import from the United States. Most of Canadian coal, oil, natural gas, gold, copper, nickel, lead and uranium and agricultural products are exported to the United States, it also exports car and residential facilities to the U.S. (Fry, 2009). Canada's exports to the U.S. account for more than 80% of its total exports, and the U.S. is the largest investor of Canada, 80% of foreign direct investment in Canada is from the United States. For example, America's largest car manufacturer has set up factories in Canada, it acquires huge profit and create a lot of employment opportunities for Canada at the same time. Thus, demand and investment in the United States play a key role in Canadian economy, Canada’s economic dependence on America is very obvious (Fry, 2009). The high degree of economic integration between the United States and Canada is also reflected in the high degree of integration of their financial markets. Canada's foreign investment is mainly concentrated in the United States, in addition to direct investment, Canadian investors hold a large number of stocks and bonds of American companies. At the same time, investors in U.S. also largely hold Canadian stocks and bonds (Fergusson, 2011).
The potential consequences of Canada’s excessive economic dependence on the United States is that Canadian economy is largely affected by American economy, Canadian economy expands or contracts as American economic expands or contracts.
