Canada-US relationship has always been considered special and important due to their sharing of borders. The US and Canada bilateral relationship is among the closest and most extensive. However, this special relationship is not without problems. Keystone XL pipeline is one of them. This has been a long discussed topic. Recently, Obama has declared that Keystone XL pipeline shall be approved if it increases greenhouse gas emissions. Because of keystone XL pipeline, Canada-US relationship during the past several months were claimed to be on the rocks or even ruined. It was said that US would meet Canada’s cold shoulder if US government rejected this pipeline program. Though “Denying that approval would not be considered a snub; it would be considered a betrayal”, the author in this paper believes that this dispute will not affect deeply Canada-US relationship.

This paper gives a review of Canada-US relationship in light of the Keystone XL pipeline debate. This has issue has lingered and waited for resolution. And it has led to the worry of Canada-US relationship. But I believe that It is these two neighboring countries have more in common than in controversy. To sum up, in spite of disputes which are common between nations, Canada will continue to maintain generally cordial relations with the US in most arenas and seems to be willingly to play a secondary role. The author in this paper believes that Canada and the US will continue to enjoy a good relationship in the future. Yet there is excuse for complacency. Just as one of the figures said “We need to work hard on the partnership, which will sometimes require tough bargaining and mobilizing our allies across the U.S. political system to work towards Canadian objectives”.
