Raymond Williams’ father was a railway worker and also the secretary of the local Branch Labour Party in the 1920s. His birthplace was in a village where the railway workers were favour of Labour party while most of the farmers voted Liberal. His teenage years were full of terror caused by Nazis and the war. When he was 14 years old, the Spanish Civil War broke out that led him to the local Left Book Club. Attending a youth conference in Geneva in 1937 with this club, he bought The Communist Manifesto and read a Karl Marx book for the first time. Williams attended Trinity College of Cambridge, where he joined the Communist Party of Great Britain. There, he was assigned to make a Communist Party pamphlet which contained some information about the war between Russia and Finland. He wrote in Politics and Letters (1979) that they 'were given the job as people who could write quickly, from historical materials supplied for us. You were often in there writing about topics you did not know very much about, as a professional with words.'

He never liked the university very much as when asked to write about those days in a book called My Cambridge (1977a), his essay was starting with, 'It was never my Cambridge. That was clear from the start'. Williams got to leave off his education because he was called to the army to serve at World War II. He was still in the British Army in the winter of 1940 when he returned to Cambridge to attend his exams. At the same time, Germany attacked Russia. Communist party did not allow his members to join the army. So, Williams formally abdicated the Party and went to the battle.
