Engagement, however, had not been studied socomprehensively as Attitude at the primary period of Appraisal theory, so Martin and Whitetogether revised the modeling network of ES in 2005 ( Wang Zhenhua, 2010).Since its birth, Appraisal theory has been applied by researchers to various academicfields and yielded fruitful academic results. White (2001)，however, had pointed, “Appraisaltheory is very much an on-going research project - many problems are still to be solved andmany 1 exicogrammatical and semantic issues have yet to be addressed. There are numerousregisters and discourse domains to which the theory has not yet been applied". Comparedwith Attitude, Engagement seemingly asks for further and thorough study. So during recentyears, White has shown great concern to Engagement, and continuously improved it (White,1998,2001,2005).American presidential inaugural address (hereafter APIA) is the address delivered bythe newly elected American president on the inauguration day and henceforth, he willassume the post as the Chief Executive of the United States officially, marking the end of theelection campaign and beginning of a new administration at the same time, “a ritual oftransition in which the covenant between the citizenry and their leaders is renewed"(Gronbeck, 1990). Although not required by the Constitution, APIA is delivered every fouryears by all the American presidents before taking office since George Washington's firstinauguration address in 1789. It has become a political tradition and played an important rolein American social and political life. In the inaugural address, the president-elect will lay outhis fundamental political values and principles，set forth policies and objectives for the newadministration in the next four years, and promise a bright future to the public.
