In democratic leadership style, leaders will let the team to participate in decision-making, all programs are decided by collective discussion and leaders only do some guidance, encouragement and assistance (Fitness, 2000). In laissez-faire leadership style, team members have full freedom of decision and the leader is hardly involved in decision making.
Thirdly, the treatment for subordinates is different. Under autocratic leadership style, leaders are involved in specific work tasks and make intervention to staff’s work combination, even don’t let staff know the whole process of work and the ultimate goal. In democratic leadership style, employees are free to choose anybody who they can work together, the division of task also has been decided by the team and leaders will let staff know the whole goal of work ( Berson, etc., 2001). In laissez-faire leadership style, leaders only provide necessary information and materials and also answer the question which asked by stuff.
Fourthly, leader’s influence is different. Under autocratic leadership style, leader has influence on group members by these factors such as mandatory power and status. In democratic leadership style, leaders through their own ability, personality and these psychological qualities to affect group members and group members are willing to obey the leader command and leadership. However, in laissez-faire leadership style, leaders are lack of the influence of team members.
Finally, the ways of evaluation and feedback are different. Under autocratic leadership style, leaders adopt personalized method and using more personal emotions to evaluate the employees’ work. Leaders adopt punitive feedback way. In democratic leadership style, leaders according to the objective facts evaluate the staff’s working and put feedback as a way to staff training. In laissez-faire leadership style, leaders will not make evaluate and feedback to staff’s work.


6.0 The performance under different kinds of leadership style

Scholars throw themselves into study what kind of leadership style can improve team’s overall performance. Results show that group performance under laissez-faire leader is lower than authoritarian and democratic leaders; group work number is roughly the same between the leadership of authoritarian and democratic; the group under the leadership of democratic leaders has higher quality of group work and job satisfaction.
Based on this result, lewin and other researchers originally thought that democratic leadership style appears to bring good work quality and quantity, at the same time, group members’ job satisfaction is also higher. Therefore, democratic leadership style is probably the most effective leadership style (Ogbonnaa and Harrisa, 2000).Unfortunately, the researchers then found more complex result.
In some times, democratic leadership style may produce better job performance than autocratic leadership style. But in other cases, democratic leadership style may bring about lower work performance or just correspond to autocratic leadership style. However, research results about job satisfaction of group members are consistent with previous research results, which in generally, under democratic leadership style, job satisfaction of group members will be higher than under autocratic leadership style.
