Roosevelt’s four inaugural speeches as objects ofstudy, and mainly uses the modality system in Halliday’s systemic functional grammaras theoretical framework. In Halliday’s interpersonal function,https://www.51lunwen.org/yywxlw/ mood and modality arethe main two systems that show what role language play in establishing and maintainingrelationships between the speaker and listener. This thesis chooses the modality systemto explore the linguistic realizations of the interpersonal relations between the speakerand hearers. It is to show the characteristics of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four inauguralspeeches respectively. It studies how Roosevelt uses her language to present his politicalpower and aims, persuade the hearers to accept and support his policy through asystematic analysis of linguistic elements. It is expected to point out that choosingappropriately the interpersonal elements of a language may help an addresser to make asuccessful speech. Interpersonal meanings are also realized through the personalpronoun system. By analyzing how Roosevelt associates power and aims explicitly orimplicitly, this thesis aims to show what an important role the interpersonal functionplays in the course of addressing an inaugural address.

1.1 The Questions and Methods of the Study研究问题和方法
In general, an inaugural address is a speech delivered by the newly electedpresident to audiences on the inauguration day. The new president will publicize his willand his responsibility. Besides, the new administrator’s philosophy of politics and theoutline of his policy will be revealed in the inaugural speech. Thus, inaugural addressesare fairly significant and worldwide influent. In the inaugural speech, the newly electedpresident tries to persuade the citizens of the nation to accept his political viewpoint,and to call for support and loyalty to his political regime. In a word, inaugural address isaimed at convincing a national audience of the benefits, molding public viewpoint,inspiring public for action, placing the new government in a favorable position andseeking the largest amount of support.Then, how does the one-way oral address reach these multiple aims? How doesthe language take effect? And how do the linguistic elements finish the interpersonalmeanings? These are the questions of this study.Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used in this study to solve thesequestions.
