Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Research Background

As an important skill for ESL students, English reading is the mostdifficult for the majority of them. As is known to all, reading is a major way toconsolidate what learners have learned as well as help them acquire new knowledge.Reading teaching in our country provides opportunities for students to acquire newlanguage and leam more about the world, especially the western countries. Besides, theimprovement of students' reading competence is also beneficial for the improvement oflistening,speaking and writing ability. According to Mew Curriculum Standards forJunior School English, students in Grade Eight should have the ability to get the mainidea of the reading material by identifying the meaning of the key words (the Ministryof Education 2003). The requirement in the curriculum gives English teachers a cleardirection and makes them realize the importance of reading teaching in junior highschool.The role of the FL in SLA has been a hot topic for the linguists, among which LTattracts linguists’ attention for a long time. Odlin defines transfer as the process of usingthe learner's FL while learning a second language (1989: 27). It can be positive ornegative. Whether transfer is positive or negative are determined by the similarities ordifferences between the learner's FL and the TL. The popularity of transfer theoryinfluences English teaching for a long period of time. Some researchers even proposethe slogan “teaching for transfer” in the fields of education (Huang Xiulan: 118-120;Zhang Chunling: 43-45). As an essential role transfer plays in ESL teaching, it leadsjunior high school teachers take much count of the application of transfer theory toEnglish teaching. They try to make full use of positive transfer and avoid negativetransfer in English teaching process from all aspects.


1.1.1 Current Situation of Junior High School English Reading Teaching
Reading is an important tool in getting information as well as acquiring new skills,and also it is an indispensable part in people's daily life. Among all kinds of SL readings in the world, English reading has undergone a long way, and it becomes more and moreimportant because English is the most popular and widely spoken language in the world.English reading teaching in junior high school is even important because the students injunior high schools are forming their own learning style. Appropriate reading under theteacher's guide helps students form the right beliefs and values in deed. Though Englishreading has its irreplaceable role in China, it can not change the fact that Englishreading teaching in junior high school has its weakness.
