摘要:For English Language Learners in China, reading is the basis to obtain all availableinformation. In the age of information explosion today, English reading is especiallyimportant and outstanding in language learning and teaching.
2.1 Definition and Classification of Reading Strategies
Learning strategies for reading or reading strategies have been given the definitions bymany scholars. In view of writings in cognitive psychology, learning strategies are describedas “learning skills, behaviors, method of solving problems which make learning moreeffective and efficient” (Oxford and Crookall, 1989). In the process of reading, readingstrategies show how readers imagine an assignment, what contextual clues they make use of,how they make out the meaning of the content, and what measures they take if they can notcomprehend (Block, 1986). Reading strategies refer to “the mental operations touched uponwhen readers face a text with purpose and understand what they read”. (Barnett, 1988)In order to obtain the information, enjoy the content and improve reading ability, it isnecessary to take advantage of some reading methods, skills and strategies. Reading methodsrefer to the tactics and methods of the learners in the context of reading articles and books.Reading method is the most important part in English teaching, even, it is the main learningskill for the students to master well (Cai Xiang and Liu Yan, 2000). Reading strategy isunderstood as a behavioral process of learners for solving the difficulties in reading, and is animportant part of learners’ strategy abilities.

2.2 Review of Research on Reading Strategies
The earliest research on learning strategies began with characteristics of outstandinglanguage learners. Foreign studies on learning strategies are divided into two kinds:descriptive study and intervention study. Descriptive research mainly depicted the strategycharacteristics that good learners use, comparing two different groups of learners’ strategy use.Intervention study is to carry out the experiment on students’ strategy training. During theexperiment, the students first accept various strategies learning, and then have the abilities tocombine various strategies together in different ways.Research of reading strategies has centered upon depicting cognitive strategiesmentioned in comprehension. Hosenfeld (1977) adopted a think-aloud method to explorereading strategies applied by successful and unsuccessful second language readers when theydeal with written materials. He discovered that successful readers employ some kind ofcontextual guessing on the basis of the process of inductive reasoning. It was also identifiedthat inference strategies were considerably applied by successful readers.Chou Have and Smith (1982) detected the distinction in reading strategies use betweenEnglish monolinguals and Spanish ESL students by means of well-organized interview. Twokinds of strategies were involved in their research, namely, strategies for improving readingcomprehension and those getting over the difficulties in comprehension.
