Chapter One Introduction


1.1 The Importance of Reading
Reading is a kind of important activity in human society. This activity produced withthe emergence of words. Because of the words, acoustic information of language can beconverted into visual information. The language preserves in a long term and therestrictions on time and space can be a breakthrough. Thus, human experience has beensystematically preserved and spread.With regard to senior high school, reading is also an important factor in foreignlanguage teaching and learning, for it is the main learning measure to high school studentsand the significant goal of teaching. The Senior High School English CurriculumStandard which is newly-issued has set comprehensive requirement of reading ability. Itincludes the enlargement of vocabulary, the improvement of reading speed, the decodingability of language and discourse, the combination of the multi-interdisciplinary etc. Thusit can be seen that: without solid reading proficiency, readers will only suffer failure bothin second language acquisition and in communication with native English-speakingcounterparts.

1.2 The Problems of Reading Teaching in High School
At present, there exists problems of English teaching that unable to be overcame.Firstly, the traditional teaching model maintains a dominant position in senior highschool. The reasons consist of the burdensome teaching tasks and the limited Englishclass. According to this kind of model (preparing lessons before class, answeringquestions and finishing exercises during class), the students’ thinking may turn out to bepassive and their horizons will be restricted. Teachers are reluctant to study and adoptnew reading theories. They think it is important and enough to analyze the vocabularies,grammar and language patterns and seems no need to train the abilities of appreciation,reading skills and introduce the related background knowledge. As a result, students are lack of interest in reading.Secondly, students are deficient in the guidance of reading strategies. We can notdeny that language knowledge is the main obstacle in English learning. It coverspronunciation, vocabulary, phrase, sentence, grammar and so on. Our students are moredependent on linguistic knowledge than background knowledge, especially theunderachieving students. Most of the students hold the opinion that words and phrases arethe biggest barrier in reading, therefore, they form a kind of bad habit, which is they arereluctant to move on until all the new words are recognized. However, this method willmake themselves read disjointedly and slowly. What’s worse, the teachers lay too muchstress on linguistic knowledge and ignore the background knowledge and organizationalform. And few students utilize the method of “reading for general idea” to cultivate theirreading habit and improve reading level.

2.1 Definition of Reading
Zhang Biyin has an all-sided definition of reading in his book Reading Psychology:Reading is a non-intelligence process that affects reader to acquire information fromwritten material (1992:1).The writer encodes his thoughts into words and even a coherent text. In order tomake sense of the text, reader should decode it and grasp the plain sense accurately.“There is thus an essential interaction between language and thought in reading.
