1.2 Research significance and purpose
Although the importance of English reading is increasing continuously, the current situation of English reading teaching is not optimistic. Under teachers’ traditional teaching model, students’ English reading ability does not have significant improvement due to lack of interest. However, according to new English curriculum standard, one of the most important goals of English teaching is to foster students’ learning interest and other good learning habits. Meanwhile, critical reading has been proved to be a useful way to motivate students’ reading interest and it also meets the need of education. Therefore, this research combines critical reading with English reading teaching in senior high school in order to meet the requirements of education and new English curriculum standard. This study aims to explore whether the application of critical reading in Senior High School can increase students’ interest and most importantly, improve students’ reading scores. Applying critical reading to senior high school English reading teaching not only has theoretical meaning but also realistic significance. On the one hand, although there are a lot of scholars have made some achievements in the field of critical reading, domestic studies starts late and the experience is not enough, especially lacks of relevant empirical studies. Most of the existing empirical studies are carried out in the university and there are few empirical studies about critical reading selected senior high school students as the research objects. Therefore, this thesis takes critical reading into Grade 2 and the reading materials are from school textbooks. Based on the previous researches, this research not only includes the definition, characteristics and theoretical basis of critical reading, but also explores a new reading teaching model, which adapts to senior high school English reading teaching.
