Chapter Four Data analysis and discussion 

The  data  collected  from  test  and  questionnaire  are  analyzed  by  the  researcher  in  this chapter,  which  aims  to  see  whether  critical  reading  is  more  effective  than  traditional reading teaching.  

4.1 Data analysis and discussion of research question one 

A  pre-test  and  post-test  have  been  employed  to  prove  whether  critical  reading  can improve the students’ reading scores. The purpose of pre-test in both EC and CC is to be sure whether the students’ English reading level in both EC and CC is the same or not. The post-test  is  to  investigate  the  changes  of  students’  reading  scores.  The  test  papers  are identical for the experimental class and the control class. The scores in the two classes are both analyzed with SPSS 17.0.Table 4.1 shows the mean score in EC is 19.190 while the mean score in CC is 19.040. Then after comparing the mean scores of the two classes, it is clear that there is no obvious difference between EC and CC and their English reading level is nearly at the same level.
