and new life. In Paul D’s escape from the jail quarry, the Indian shows the direction to the North by taking flowers as the indicator. The natural images are highly symbolic and thus are real in the lives of these characters.
Through the depiction of the lives of three generations of black women, Morrison shows great compassion to the struggles of black women in the pursuit of their self-identity. In the process of healing the wounds of slavery, these individual women also communicate with black men and the community. Their individual experiences and their communication with men and community are subversion of the anthropocentrism and patriarchy, which embodies Toni Morrison’s ecofeminist consciousness.

Chapter Two The Victims of Anthropocentric Dualism

In the framework of anthropocentricism, there exists logic of domination in the relationship between human and nonhuman, culture and nature, man and woman. The Western patriarchal civilization is built upon such dualism and the oppression to the ‘other’ is a universal phenomenon. This chapter will examine how nature, black women, and black men are victimized under the Western anthropocentric dualism.
2.1 The Maltreated Nature
Since anthropocentricism and dualism are the predominant ideology in Western society, human becomes the center of the universe and nature has been regarded as the feminine, the emotional, the inferior, and the primitive in the anthropocentric belief system. The nonhuman existence in natural environment is also viewed as lacking the ability of human, like mind and agency. According to this kind of view, human is hyperseperated from nature, superior to nature and thus it encourages human’s separation from nature. Man’s highest purpose, as believed by anthropocentrism, lies in His ability to achieve progress by transforming nature. Nature becomes objectified, and the purpose of nature’s existence is degraded to support the development of human culture.
As Greta Gaard (1993) states, ecofeminism’s basic premise is that the ideology that authorizes “oppressions based on race, class, gender, sexuality, physical abilities, and species is the same ideology which sanctions the oppression of nature (1)”. The anthropocentric dualism authorizes the oppression of nature and justifies the exploitation of nature. Since the Science Revolution of Western world, human beings have acquired powerful instruments to master nature. As Merchant (2004) states that,
the Scientific Revolution’s success in formulating a mechanistic approach to science allowed humanity to predict and therefore to control, manage, and dominate nature (205).
The mechanical science include Newtonian and Descartian physics, optics, thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism and other branches of sciences. In these systems, nature was treated as the object of research, and the universe is clock-like. Humans are the master of nature.
Nature is studied and used in the dualistic way. Human characteristics and animal characteristic are opposite to each other. The natural and nonhuman creatures are treated by their usefulness to human world. The Schoolteacher can be viewed as the representative of such science and knowledge. At Sweet Home, he built a kind of regime under the cover of knowledge. He measured Sethe, taking notes of slaves’ behaviours, studying them seriously. His premise was that they were nonhuman and lacked human intelligence.

2.2 The Battered Black Women
