Explore the "the colour Purple" in the course of the awakening of black women

Abstract

Alice Walker is an influential black writer. Greatly influenced by feminism, she regards striving for racial equality and women liberation as her life long career. Most of her works are based on her native region---the deep South of Georgia and Mississippi，concerning  the black history and the cultural history of blacks in the south of America, showing their love and hatred，and reflecting their struggle for equal rights and complete selfhood.
The Color Purple，Alice Walker’s representative work，became very popular ever since its publication in 1982，arousing attention in the critical field, and creating a lot of enlightening research of its form, content and theme. This thesis tries to explore the path of black women’s spontaneous awaking. This assay will combine with African-American historical background and cultural traditions of black women to explore the awaking of the black women. Their way to liberation also echoes lots of elements of Alice Walker’s womanism, which is defined as black feminism or feminism of the color.
Chapter One explores the root of the dual oppression and the thesis focuses on the double oppressions on the black women in the novel. On the one hand, the sexual and violent oppression on the black women from the black men is discussed. On the other hand the racial oppression on the black women from the white people is the topic of the second part from Celia and Sofia.
Chapter Two makes a detailed analysis of the African American culture. The culture reshaping includes quilt-making and pants-making. And the culture heritage embodied in the novel , covers such aspects as sisterhood, extended family, and myth. With incomparable insight, Walker weaves African American cultural heritage into a quilt of compassion that she spreads before the world—full, rich, and flowing. Through her exhaustive portrayal, Walker shows her love for African American culture clearly in her writing.
Chapter Three focuses on the exploitation to her individualism and self-reliance and advances her tentative solution ---- womanism in the hope of curing the social diseases of racism and sexism and promoting black women’s emancipation.
Chapter Four delivers a summary of the thesis which points out the definite road when the black women undergoes  awakening, independence, liberation. Women's primary task is to liberate women from the oppression of patriarchy in order to give them an independent personality, including economic, emotional independence.
